As both an RN and a motorcyclist, I'm responding to the guest editorial, "Motorcycle Safety: Using Your Head" (February 2009).* I agree with the author that most motorcycle crashes are preventable. However, she seems to put the burden of safety solely on the cyclist. I always wear a helmet and the appropriate clothing and footwear, I ride defensively, and I don't assume a motorist sees me, even if he appears to be looking at me. But many cycle/car crashes are the fault of the driver of the car. Motorists need to be alert for cyclists and remember that a motorcycle is always going faster than it appears. Intersections and left turns are especially dangerous for motorcyclists.

The accompanying article in the same issue, "An Upward Trend in Motorcycle Crashes,"* was excellent and timely. I hope it will increase nurses' awareness.
