Abstract

This case study focuses on the communication between a palliative home care team and the family caregivers who cared for a dying husband, a father, a son. The formal and informal networks available to the family members are described according to the experiences of one of the family caregivers. Examples on different ways of communication, verbal and nonverbal, are given. The impact of communication on the support to the dying patient and his family is analyzed. A core concept in the palliative home care was trust, built up by communication. Communication is discussed in relation to flexibility on structural and individual levels, continuity, and empowerment of the family caregivers.
