I'd like to add a comment to "I.V. Therapy: Flushing Facts" (Advice, p.r.n., June 2005). After administering I.V. medication, you should flush the line at the same rate as the drug. For example, if you administered 1 ml of medication over 5 minutes, you should administer the flush solution at the same slow rate. This ensures that the medication in the catheter and tubing, which gets pushed through with the flush solution, is administered at the proper rate.
